The Tricorder X PRIZE is a competition announced by the X Prize Foundation on 10 May 2011 and sponsored by Qualcomm. The $ 10 million prize is awarded for creating a mobile device that can "diagnose patients better than or equal to a panel of board certified physicians".[1] The name is taken from the tricorder device in Star Trek which can be used to instantly diagnose ailments.[2][3]

The X Prize Foundation announced that they are planning to finalize the Tricorder X PRIZE design in 2011 and expect to launch the competition in early 2012.[1]
